Our Manifesto

Architects Aware is an independent group of designers, educators, policymakers, charities, campaigners, and developers who are thought leaders in the sector, both individually and collectively. The core team are all from design backgrounds where we utilise systems-based thinking to solve complex problems.  Our mission is to find solutions to the UK’s housing crisis focusing on the lack of high-quality emergency accommodation that is available to young people, families and single individuals. Our collective and individual research projects include design guidance for high quality emergency accommodation, research that demystifies the current complex systems and provides policy amendments.

Below is our Manifesto:

  1. KNOWLEDGE SHARING: Sharing knowledge and research to demystify homelessness, explain existing systems, and map current policies, initiatives and solutions.

  2. COLLABORATION: Partner with a network of industry leaders to develop implementable systems capable of addressing the homeless crisis.

  3. POLICY: Collaborate with and advise policy makers at both central and local governmental levels. Develop and respond to policies and structures addressing homelessness.

  4. DESIGN: Use brief writing, systems-based thinking, and design to create integrated solutions for the homeless crisis that complement existing policies, delivery methods, strategic business models and viability strategies.

  5. THOUGHT LEADERSHIP, RESEARCH and ADVICE: Contribute to sector thought-leadership through articles, round tables and advisory roles to projects and boards. Develop and publish research papers to influence policy and secure funding. Advise on routes to integrated design solutions for homeless accommodation.

  6. SUPPORT: Provide support to charities, local authorities, developers and community groups working within homeless populations.

Why do we need to do this work?

The homeless crisis is one of the most pressing social issues of our time, demanding urgent and comprehensive action. More than one in 25 under-18s are homeless or living in temporary accommodation in London at the end of June this year.

Architects Aware is dedicated to addressing this crisis from the perspective of the built environment. By demystifying homelessness, sharing knowledge, and influencing policy, we aim to create a world where everyone has access to safe, dignified, and affordable housing. This work is not just necessary; it is imperative for the creation of inclusive, resilient, and humane urban environments.

Where is our work focused?

Our work is focused primarily on addressing the homeless crisis in London and the UK from the perspective of the built environment. We develop strategies that are informed by and contribute to international issues, ensuring a comprehensive and globally aware approach.

How do we work?

Architects Aware meets bi-monthly? to exchange ideas and collaboratively review live projects and challenges faced by its members. External groups are invited to benefit from the knowledge sharing and experience of the group. We develop ideas, design solutions, and prospects that are affordable, practical to implement, and feasible with appropriate funding and suitable sites. Additionally, we create toolkits of ideas for others to adapt for their projects.

The group attends events to challenge and progress the sector, sharing our thoughts and ideas with the wider community. Our Advisory Review Panel offers expert advice and support to others in the sector.
